Make Kit was founded in November 2016 by Justine Fish and Steve Wilson. With their shared passion for food and community, they were inspired to create a recipe kit business with a mission.
Our mission is to make healthy, nutritious food accessible to all members of society.
Inspired by the rise of other recipe kit businesses we saw the need for a more affordable option that could offer the same benefits but to a wider audience. This meant creating a recipe kit that was great value, convenient and built recipe knowledge and cooking skills.
How did we do it? We focused on designing our recipes with locality, ease and simplicity in mind. This meant creating a clear Make Kit recipe spec; one pot, one pan, max. 10 minutes to prep and 30 minutes to cook and an average of 8 ingredients. It's challenging but encourages us to be inventive and think intelligently about our recipe design. Local distribution enables us to reduce packaging and therefore reduce cost and food miles.
Why is this important? We believe that cooking is one way to connect to your health, friends, family and community. Through learning about ingredients and new cuisines you can be inspired to try new things, share recipes, stories and understand different cultures. Food is also a great reason sit down and spend time with your loved ones!
How do we achieve our mission? We didn't want to stop there, as a social enterprise, every purchase of a Make Kit gives back to your community. We run community cooking classes with our recipe kits and subsidise kits to families in need across Hackney.
At the end of 2016, we ran a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to raise enough money to trial this idea and our recipe kits from Haggerston, in East London and received match funding from the NHS. Feedback was very positive with 90% of customers saying it increased their confidence in the kitchen and reporting eat more fresh, healthy food. With funding from Hackney Council, we are expanding our model and bringing our recipe kits to more dinner tables across the borough.
